On May 27, WordPress turned a whopping 10 years old. One of the most important digital publishing tools in the history of the Internet, the world’s go-to content management system, now supports 66 million websites. And the folks at WordPress aren’t showing any signs of slowing down in their pursuit of easy-to-use, totally customizable web publishing.
When asked how he came up with the idea in the first place, CEO Matt Mullenweg said to CNN in this interview, “I was just blogging myself and I wanted better software.”
Mullenweg waxes adoringly about his “muse,” and notes that, “You were cute before you became beautiful,” in his gushing blog post marking the big anniversary. If you want to join the celebration, WordPress is offering 10th anniversary t-shirts for a very low price in their online store.
Those of us whose livelihoods depend on the web are gushing right along with him. We couldn’t imagine our careers – or our lives – without WordPress. So thanks, Matt, for creating your masterpiece. And thanks even more for making it free.
