Why AIO strategy and content must come first (and why we refuse to double dip with metrics)

by | Content Strategy

AIO has two moving parts. First, you need content that AI platforms actually want to cite. Then, you need a way to know if your AIO efforts are working. At HPC, we take care of the first part — the strategy and content writing.

One of the questions we get during consulting calls is: “What kind of reporting can we expect?” New clients are surprised when we answer None.

But agencies give you reports, right? That’s what they do.

It’s not what we do as a content consulting and copywriting firm. And here’s why …

The measurement piece — monitoring traffic — is usually already being done by your team, another agency or a separate analytics partner. So unlike traditional agencies, we won’t double dip.

We’ve drawn this line for a reason. Our team is made up of writers and strategists. That’s where we do our best work, and where we can offer you the most value.

And the reality is, most companies need the strategy and content creation first, before metrics become meaningful. You can’t measure citation-driven traffic if you haven’t published cite-worthy content yet.

HPC’s focus on strategy and content means you get deeper expertise in the areas that move the needle. We’re not dividing our attention between drafting content and creating redundant metrics reports. You get specialists doing what they do best.

Our piece of the AIO puzzle

Our AIO work starts with research. We dig into what your target audience is actually asking AI tools and identify the content gaps in your niche. This research shapes a strategic plan that maps out which topics to tackle, how to structure the content and what questions you need to answer to increase citation opportunities.

From there, we write the content. Each piece is optimized for AI platforms to discover and cite, and they’re also valuable and highly readable for your human audience. We create the content that follows through on the strategy — comprehensive resources that answer real questions and demonstrate the expertise AI platforms look for when deciding which sources to recommend.

How AIO is measured

What we don’t do is measure AIO performance. Measurement of AIO is straightforward — your team tracks referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI platforms the same way you monitor visitors from any other source. Most companies already have Google Analytics set up to do this, so paying us to pull the same reports would waste your budget.

We stay in our lane (and that’s a good thing for you)

To get visitors and customers from AI platforms, you need content that earns citations and a way to measure referral traffic.

Both matter. They just require different skill sets. Strategy and content creation come first because you need something worth measuring before analytics become useful.

HPC’s focus on strategy and content means you get a team that spends all its time thinking about what makes content citation-worthy. Not a team juggling content creation with performance tracking. That kind of focus leads to sharper strategy and stronger writing.
